Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, born on February 16, 1960, in Daudawa, Nigeria, is a prominent Nigerian politician, quantity surveyor, and investor. EarlyLife and Education  

Nasir El-Rufai grew up in a Fulani family in Daudawa, Katsina State. After losing his father at a young age, he was supported by his uncle, who ensured he received a quality education. He attended Barewa College, where he excelled academically, graduating at the top of his class in 1976. Later, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, with first-class honors. His thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there—he went on to earn multiple advanced degrees, including an MBA, a law degree, and a master’s in public administration from Harvard University.  

 A Stellar Professional Career  

Before venturing into politics, El-Rufai made a name for himself in the private sector. In 1982, he founded El-Rufai & Partners, a quantity surveying firm that thrived during Nigeria’s military era, securing lucrative contracts, including those for the construction of Abuja. His success in business laid the foundation for his future contributions to public service.  

 Political Career: A Catalyst for Change  

El-Rufai’s political journey began in 1998 when he was appointed as an economic advisor to then-head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar. He played a key role in Nigeria’s transition to democracy and was later appointed as the Director of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, where he spearheaded the privatization of several government-owned corporations.  

In 2003, he became the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja. During his tenure, he implemented sweeping reforms to combat corruption and restore the city’s master plan. His efforts earned him the nickname “Mr. Demolition” due to his policy of removing illegal structures, which, while controversial, significantly improved urban planning.  

 Governorship of Kaduna State  

El-Rufai’s most notable role came in 2015 when he was elected Governor of Kaduna State. His administration focused on improving education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He introduced the Treasury Single Account policy, which streamlined state finances and saved billions of naira. His reforms in the civil service and education sector, including the recruitment of qualified teachers, were widely praised.  

 Personal Life and Family  

Nasir El-Rufai is married to Hadiza Isma El-Rufai, a renowned novelist and philanthropist. Together, they established the Yasmin El-Rufai Foundation in memory of their late daughter, Yasmin, to promote literacy and creativity among children. The couple has eight children, including Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, who is now a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives.
